IT MEANS & MATERIALS
Most of the construction materials—gravel, cement, sand, lime, beams, pipes, stones, bricks, slabs, metal reinforcements, insulation materials, and more—periodically arrive on the island transported by large barges known as “ciabatte,” which depart from the port of Igoumenitza.
The goods come from different regions of Greece, and sometimes even from Italy. All the trucks converge at the port of Igoumenitza and patiently wait for the moment when they can be loaded onto the ship.
It is an extremely demanding moment that requires great organizational skills, as it involves many vehicles and people at the same time and calls for constant supervision.
First come the trucks loaded with gravel, sand, bags of cement and lime—plus a few pallets of drinking water for the family.
Bulldozers drive on and off the ship to pile up and arrange the loads, and then the process continues with the rest of the materials.
Departure for Othoni
Finally, after hours and hours of work, the ship is full, the trucks have delivered their loads and head back, and the bulldozers finish balancing the weight on board. Slowly the atmosphere becomes calmer.
If everything has gone well, at the first light of dawn it’s time to depart.
